Message from the Chairperson
It is an honour and a privilege to invite you to the 3rd TB Conference of South Africa!
The rate of TB infection is on the rise. To add to this challenge, the TB epidemic is fuelled by high HIV co-infection rates and compounded by drug-resistant forms of the disease. Despite this, advances have been made in tuberculosis control as well as knowledge sharing and TB awareness. These successes have stemmed from the 2008 and 2010 TB Conferences, which provided a platform for TB/HIV communities to interact, learn and showcase the best-practises that contributed to the positive gains.
The 3rd TB Conference will build on the momentum of the previous TB conferences and give communities an opportunity to assess progress towards reaching TB/HIV targets. Thus, giving meaning to our theme for the 2012 TB Conference: “Reaching the target”.
As is known by many, TB is a disease which roots in the social structures of societies. This conference will therefore, not only be about science. The Organising Committee is already working hard to bring to you an exciting and original social programme. As in the past, the conference will have three tracks, namely Basic Science; Clinical, Epidemiological and Operational Research and Patient and Civil Society Mobilisation and Advocacy.
Join us from 12-15 June 2012. Watch this space for updates on important dates for registration and abstract submissions.
Please join fellow South Africans, working in communities, health facilities, policy and science in embracing this opportunity for reaching the targets!
Prof Martie van der Walt, Conference Chair
